My First Boatride

I wanted to try giving fishing another shot because I was tired of leveling up. I had tried it twice and had spent over 4,000 gil before I even decided it today. So I dished out another 4,000 gil for a carbon rod (which everything I’ve been reading says is perfect for the little moat of Bastok). First cast, SNAP, it broke. I lost the 4,000 rod in one cast. Frustrated as I could possibly be, I messaged Glenn to ask how to get to Windurst so I could just go to the fishing guild and try to figure out something else. He informed me I had to take the boat from Selbina and then run the rest of the way once I was on the other side.

Fine. He said that the boat ride was painless though it took a bit of time. Also fine. I went to Selbina, paid the fare and waited. Finally the boat arrived and I boared. “This is kind of cool” I thought. I had never even thought about riding the boat before because I had heard stories of it being attacked by pirates. “Don’t worry,” Glenn told me, “it rarely happens and if it does happen just stay below deck and you’ll be safe.” Good.

Boy this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Finally the boat departed and I saw the neat little FMV of it sailing away. All right, fine. The doors opened so we could explore the boat and I figured I’d take once glimpse of the top deck and then return to the bottom deck to stay out of the way and to stay safe. So I rounded the corner. This is what I was greeted with when I ran out the door.

I didn’t even have time to go “what the?”  before it slapped me for over 400 damage and I deleveled. But right before my body collapsed I managed to take a pic. To make matters worse, my network dropped to 0% and I pinged out. I logged back on and managed to get someone to raise me, though I don’t understand WHY I was allowing myself to be raised since the freakin monster was still there. For those who can’t tell by the pic (it wasn’t that great of a pic, I admit) that was the level 60~65 NM monster “Sea Horror.” No one on the boat stood a chance (everyone was level 18 to 22, save for one white mage who was level 30 I believe).

I got raised just in time for me to ping out again (literally, I hit the “accept” button and then pinged out). I decided, since if I died again I might further decrease in level, that I should just stay off for about 15 minutes. And it worked out. But that’s not the point. I lost a level on a “safe” voyage to go fish. Oh yeah, and by the way, when I got to Windurst the place was closed so I couldn’t do anything anyway (then I pinged out again, and this time I just stayed off).

Sometimes I wonder if this game hates me.
