LUA Infobar Preview

Just a quick post to confirm my previous post.  The LUA Infobar addon is almost complete.  There are a few minor syntax type issues (such as showing “not aggressive” which eats up a lot of space on that bar) works.

I’ll write one more post when Kenshi releases it to the public so that everyone can go grab it.

A New Infobar Written in LUA Coming Soon!

Hello everyone.

I have noticed that a majority of the traffic that this blog gets is people interested in the Infobar Windower plugin.  Usually these are people looking for updates, be it the database or (lately) the actual DLL.  If you’re someone who already uses the plugin then you know that it hasn’t been working in quite some time after an XI update completely broke it.  You may be wondering why it hasn’t been updated when pretty much every other addon and plugin has been fixed since then.   To answer that, here’s a quote from Iryoku from the Windower forum:

InfoBar is the hardest plugin we have to maintain. It makes minimal use of the Windower plugin API and does everything its own way. It even implements its own scripting language using a custom-built interpreter. What happens when we fix all of the other plugins is we make a few minor changes to the plugin API source files, and then we can just recompile all the plugins and they’re good to go. With Infobar that doesn’t work, and we have to re-implement all of those fixes again for a completely different API that none of us are familiar with. Knowing this, you might be able to understand why none of us really ever want to tackle fixing InfoBar, and it’s perpetually put off for later.

The solution to this is to emulate the way Infobar works in a brand new LUA-based addon.  Over on the Windower forum the user Kenshi has been doing exactly that.  He basically rewrote Infobar from the ground up using LUA.  What does this mean? Well, it means that when Square-Enix decides to update XI it shouldn’t break anything.  Or, if it does, it should be able to be fixed within a few hours, maybe even a few minutes, afterwards.  Great, right?

What about the old database that I was working on?  Wouldn’t we have to write a brand new one?  Nope.  I spent a chunk of time yesterday writing a LUA sqlite script that could pull the information from the old Infobar database.  This is both good but also a little troublesome as there are some issues that come with this.  The biggest issue is that the database isn’t complete and someone else may have to finish that part up as I just don’t have time to add the dozens of missing monsters and data into the DB any more.  But adding a few dozen is better than having to go back and readd the entire FFXI bestiary.

Anyway, the addon isn’t fully released yet.  I believe Kenshi has one more issue to tackle before it can be released to the general public but it’s getting close.  As a user of Infobar for many, many years I’m super excited for this to finally be working again.  As a fellow user of Infobar I thought it’d be nice to share this information to the people who somehow end up on this blog looking for info on the plugin.  Just hang in there a little longer and it’ll be worth it. 🙂

Da Grind

These past few days have been rather busy.

Last Wed I back to the Adoulin zones and obtained “Watercraft”, “Watercrafting”, “Climbing” and Restrainment Resilence. After that I went and got the raptor mount quest done.  Almost did it in the first try but was literally approaching the 5th food when it kicked me off and I had to restart.  Got it on the second try though.  Thanks to spending the login points I now have a raptor and a crab.  Woo.

Then went and got ranger to 65 before getting bored with grinding and deciding to work on the AF armor (mainly because right now I don’t really have any gear for that job so I’m horribly undergeared).  Have to start with the weapon quest, of course, and that is probably the most annoying weapon quest in the game.  Needed to go to Ranguemont Pass and farm Glittering Sand from Evil Weapons.  Problem is.. there’s only 3 Evil Weapons in the entire zone and the drop rate is something like 19% with a 15 minute respawn time.  GG SE, GG.   I finally got it on the 7th enemy but didn’t have time to go finish the quest.

The following day I tried the hard Ifrit Prime mode to try and farm Rem’s pages and got utterly murdered.  I barely stayed in the yellow HP and by 50% of Ifrit’s life I was done.  My trusts were spent and there was nothing I could do about it.  So that showed me just how ill-prepared I am for the newer content.    Smz and I latered duoed it and won but it wasn’t a fast win by any means.

I was trying to figure out a way to solo it and I think I would need an ilevel 119 weapon but in order to use that I would need the su1 job point gift (which I’m nowhere near lol) or would need to do Skirmish (which I can’t see myself soloing) to get a non-Su1 119 weapon.  Also would probably need to have at least two WHM trusts going (or maybe a RDM and WHM) and try to be the DD myself.   But by the time I can finally get around to doing it, we probably would have already duoed it and been done with it lol. Another option would be to try the Ouryu battlefield but for that I would need an ilevel bow and maxed archery (which I’m nowhere near) so that I could hit him while he’s in the air.  So.. yeah.. lol.

We also ran Nyzul for two or three hours straight trying to get a Windslicer for me so that I can start working on the WS unlock.  Unfortunately the game kept trolling and gave us multiple lamp floors nearly every run (which eats up a ton of time as almost all of them were having to hit the lamps in a certain order and there was always 4 lamps).  On the few runs where we didn’t have lamps there were very few NMs  or the NMs dropped the wrong weapons.  That’s my kind of RNG luck though.

Yesterday I leveled BLU for the lulz.  got it from 58 to 77 and capped Assimilation merit skill that gives more blue points (so now I have +5).  I’m way behind on spells though.  I mean, I was behind to begin with and now I’m like 30 levels behind on spells.  GG.  I don’t even know which ones are important enough to bother trying to learn.  Regardless, I’m not going to attempt that until I get the BLU AF hands piece since that gives enhanced learning.  But in order to do that, I need to do the quest Transformations.

Today I did a lot more grinding.

First, I realized I had enough copper vouchers and sparks to finish up the pages to get my Waikdo Haidate+1.  Then I had enough to get the pages for the Wakido Kote.  Completely sparkless and voucherless, I then decided to run Nyzul three more times and got to floor 21.  No Windslicer though, of course.  Having become annoyed at that I grinded over 200 merits and finished the BLU meriting (blue magic skill is capped and all the main BLU merits are done).  In that process I also obtained 8 more job points.  50 job points still seems like a long ways away… X_x  [currently at 26 spent]

Merits were coming so fast that I couldn’t even spend them fast enough.  At one point I was capped and just let it stay capped while I farmed capacity points.  It would have been more of an inconvenience to warp home, spend them, warp back and get all the trusts out/get going again.

But GG SE.  They basically made merits pointless at this point lol.

And for whatever this counts as, I can now store 47 merit points at a time which is even crazier.

Oh and I also had 51,998 unity accolades (which I spent 45k on keys though didn’t get anything good from the gobbie chest) and I’m back up to 38k sparks (after spending them all).

So. Much. Grinding.

I’m actually looking forward to having a week or two off when this free period ends before I resub just to rest my hands to play something else that isn’t as grindy as this. :XD:

Another Free Period!

Oh cool, it’s another free period for players.  Maybe I can do some more RoV.  I did beat the second chapter and really enjoyed the story up until this point.  Let’s see what chapter 3 brings.

Huh. Okay. So she’s hiding out in there and I need to kill three four-armed monsters.  Got it.  No problem!

Uhhhh.. Housten, we have a problem!

img_20160516_135026Mayday! Mayday!

…oh.   So that’s what RoV chapter 3 is going to be like.  Welp!  Guess I’m not finishing that ever!

March 2016 Free Period

Every now and again it seems SquareEnix allows old unsubscribed players to play again and this is usually the time when I pick up the game.  They were doing this all weekend but due to real life obligations I was only able to play today.  Still, I feel like I accomplished quite a bit.

* Killed Bune in Gustav — This is something I’ve always wanted to do ever since I saw that thing wandering around in the tunnels way back 9+ years ago. (no sword drop though)

* Obtained and spent 68 merit points. — Good grief I get merits so fast now.  It’s almost comical.  At this point I don’t even know what to spend them on any more.  Basically just dumping them into the +1 STR spots or onto other jobs (that I probably won’t touch again).

* Obtained and spent 1 job point

* Leveled BRD to level 26 (up from 1)

* Leveled DRK to level 16 (up from 7)

* Leeched RUN to 53 (up from 33) thanks to Smz

* Helped Smz get 30 merit points on his alternate character

* Messed around in Abyssea La Theine and killed Akash (no drop), Pantagruel (arctier’s torque) and Piasa (Navarch’s Choker)  — I wasn’t really aiming at anything in particular, I just got bored and wanted to kill some NMs

* Finished the WotG mission: In the Name of the Father

* Finished the WotG mission: Dancers in Distress

* Went to Castle Oztroja[s] and basically killed anything that moved, climbed to the very top and called it a day.  Think we killed two or three NMs in there too lol.

Not too bad considering I had a whopping 9 1/2 hours total to play for the weekend.

I am seriously considering resubbing soon so that I can continue the WotG story. But we’ll see..

Infobar Database – version 1.9 (possibly final from me)

Whoops!  When I said I was going to get this uploaded I didn’t expect it to take over a year.  Sorry guys.  That’s just how busy I’ve been lately.

Database Update version 1.9 (Sept 12, 2014)

With this, possibly the final release from me, I started adding the SoA areas:  Yahse Hunting Grounds, Ceizak Battlegrounds, and Moh Gates.

Due to lack of time and motivation (plus the fact that I don’t even play any more) it is highly unlikely that I will ever get around to finishing this up.  If anyone out there wants to pick up the mantle feel free.  If anyone actually gets it fully up to date I would love a copy of it as well just in case I ever decide to rejoin the game.

Good luck, brave adventurers.

Free Week Is Awesome!

Ever since I put my katana down and stepped away from Van’adiel last November I thought that my adventures in FFXI were over.  A new adventure began in Eorzea and that’s where I’ve spent most of my MMO time these days.  However, this week has been free to play so I thought I’d pick up the blade once again.

And what a week it has been.  I’ve been able to experience the entire Rhapsodies of Vana’diel story as it stands today.  I’ve also obtained and spent an additional 70 merits and 4 job points.  I’ve even unlocked bard after 8 years or so of having been on this server.  Shocking to think that I still have jobs locked (and still do; GEO and SCH remain locked) after all this time.

Last, and perhaps saddest, I was able to experience the final chapter of the Mumor event.  With FFXI basically going into auto-pilot with no more updates by early next year it seems unlikely that there will be any more new Mumor events after this one.  I’ve been lucky enough to experience all of them from the beginning. It’s kind of sad that this is probably the last one.  But it had a fitting end.

I may come back and post more about my free week experience along with some pictures in the future but for now I just wanted to post a quick entry.

..Oh and for those out there who may still wonder about Infobar… well, sadly, chances are I won’t be finishing it.  I will zip up the final database sometime later and upload it here and maybe post some instructions on how to edit it yourself if someone wants to pick up the mantle and actually get the thing updated.
